(via email from Wayne which contained the following from Judy S.)
As you know, the amount of heat transferred to the outside through windows is based on the square foot area of the windows. We’ve decided that when there’s a power outage, we will reduce the square foot area of our larger windows. One living room window has windows that slide open on either end. We bought a 4’ x 8’ x ½” board of rigid styrofoam insulation, cut it to fit the side panels of windows, and installed them. We could immediately feel the difference. We will also have this treatment available for our large sliding glass door. Tacoma Power suggested placing blankets over windows and doorways. But we bought a 4’ x 8’ x 3’ sheet of this insulation for use in doorways. We think it will work better. Roy G****, with his Nome Alaska energy package may find the Window Covers work well, but our home is not so well insulated. We’d rather not be confined to a 10’ x 10’ room, but to be able to use our living and dining rooms for a greater sense of normalcy in what could be extended periods without power. Also, the double stick tape you put the Window Covers up with can be impossible to get off. So I think we’re going to try this other alternative.
